Ranges from the Three Kings Islands to the Snares Islands (Ref. 45524). Fairly common around rocky coasts of southern North Island and South Island (Ref. 9258). Recorded in the trawl survey in Chathams Island (Ref. 45493). Caught incidentally by longliners and trawlers and as a bycatch of the rock lobster fishery (Ref. 9258). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755).
